Slowtrain: Escape the Sun (2003)

Escape the Sun
(Slowtrain)

If you liked these Austin-based fellas last winter at the Blue Moon, where they battled both the chill night air and the absence of their lone female member, you’ll love their disc, which not only adds indoor acoustics to their loose, country-rooted folk-blues but also restores the female member to her rightful place as lead singer on two songs. Although the group takes its name from Bob Dylan’s first gospel album, the overall feel is what Adam Duritz and Counting Crows might generate if they were cast as Dylan and the Band respectively in a film called Sex, Lies, and Basement Tapes. Good news for Crows stoners: Adoniram Lipton sings better than Adam Duritz. Rating: Four best cellars out of five.
